We have officially left home! We meet the rest of the corps-mates we are travelling with in Middletown to load ourselves, our luggage, and our drums into an airport limo van. I hope it has lots of space, because our drums are packed in shipping cases that are quite large. Especially Aretha’s. She is the smaller of our two bass drums, Aretha & Bertha. Bertha is staying home this time. I’ll be posting specifics about those two in the future, as well as descriptions of our other instruments and how they are the same & different from those of other similar ensembles.
For a genre that appears at first glance to be so uniform, there is a surprising amount of variation and specialization.
